Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving web site ranking in order to achieve better position on Search engine Result Pages.
Search Engines measure web pages according to their popularity and relevancy.
Popularity is all about links. The more and 'better' links you have, the higher your ranking is. The question which links are 'better' than others has numerous answers.
The majority of experts agree that links from Authority Sites have a large influence on your ranking, as well is links from sites in your area - sites that deal with the same subject. A link from your competitor is valued much more than a link from some unknown blog. For this reason, in many cases, competitors agree to place a link to each other on their website, just in order to improve their ranking. Another important factor in linking is the link anchor text. A link that says Enterprise Wireless LAN is valued much more than a link that says Extricom. Google up "click here" and see which sites are at the top 10. I'm not so sure that Adobe is making any money from this useless keyword. Links that are positioned whithin the text, are far better than links positioned in your blogroll. And the higher they are on the page, the better.
It is very important to get one way links – links from sites that did not get a link from you.
Exchanging links is ok, as long as the sites are in the same area, but sites that have only reciprocal links are considered as professional links exchangers and are treated accordingly.
If you are exchanging links with other sites, the best would be exchanging links in a way that leaves the loop open. Site A pointing to Site B, pointing to site C. Site C should not point to site A, instead it may ask a favor from Site X to point to site A. This kind of link exchange works great when people own many websites and have more tools to play the game.
A nice way to get links is to offer content to an authority site. Write an article, with good text links, and try to publish it on other sites. If your content is good many site owners will be happy to put it online as their content.
Relevancy is measured mostly by your page content and structure. The most important On-Page factor is the page <TITLE> tag. It should be focused and contain only the relevant keywords. Do not use company name in titles, and don't use meaningless words like "home page". See how many pages have "home page" in their title. Nobody is really searching for the keyword "home page" and adding it to the title is waste of energy.
There are many other factors like Keyword Density, URLs, Image ALT attributes, META Tags and others.
However, nothing can replace really good content. Google Loves Good, Unique, Well Written Content. If there was one thing that any site owner can do without any technical knowledge whatsoever, that would be it. Write good interesting and knowlegable articles with the right keywords about your products. Don't write for the robots, write for people.
Good content brings traffic and traffic brings business. And that's what you are here for, right?
